Improving the relationships between Indigenous rights holders and researchers in the Arctic: an invitation for change in funding and collaboration

Abstract Truly transdisciplinary approaches are needed to tackle the complex problems that Arctic is facing at moment. Collaboration between Indigenous rights holders and researchers through co-creative research can result in high-quality outcomes, but crucially also address colonial legacies power imbalances, enhance mutual trust, respect of Peoples. However, be successful, collaborative projects have specific requirements regarding designs, timeframes, dissemination results, which often do not fit into frameworks academic calendars funding guidelines. Funding agencies particular play an important role enabling (or disabling) meaningful collaboration researchers. There urgent need re-think existing funding-structures. This article will propose a new paradigm for financing research, centres around inclusion partners, researchers, institutions from initial planning stages programmes final projects. These findings recommendations been contextualized based on critical reflections co-authors, group non-Indigenous who practiced their own work process, challenges encountered, lessons learned.
